On 7th April 2025, Ms Anslow's 5th Year LCVP class had a very interesting talk from Limerick Suicide Watch in Limerick. Two volunteers came in to tell us about the work they do in Limerick since they started in 2016. There is a group of 60 of volunteers who walk the river bank at night and look out for signs of stress in people and try to help them. They do not enter the water, they give out life jackets and equipment that might save someone and they contact the relevant emergency services. Before doing their patrol every night they check all their equipment works properly and do radio checks on the walkie talkies. There are two teams out and they patrol by walking, bikes and driving (van) the bridges and along the River Shannon. There are lots of benefits to becoming a volunteer like meeting new people and feeling good for helping to save lives. They are purely funded by the public and they appreciate any donations where possible.
